Good morning members-
Over the last couple of weeks, I have received an alarming number of complaints and concerns regarding the implementation of peer observations in OPS. I continue be disheartened at the extremely poor approach the district is taking to implement peer observations; an approach that will only break down trust between teachers and hurt students.
By far, the most troubling aspect to how they are being implemented is the use of a documentation form that is supposed to be turned into the building administration. This practice should be viewed as evaluatory in nature by ALL teachers and anyone turning in a documentation form needs to understand they are unwillingly taking part in a teacher evaluation process.
If you are being required to participate in a peer observation during your plan time, you have a right to file a grievance as it could be a violation of our contract. If you are conducting peer observations during your “team plan” time, you may also have a right to file a grievance as I believe this too is a violation of our contract. Please contact OEA and ask to speak with one of our Organizational Specialists if you feel your contract rights are being violated and want more information about whether filing a grievance is the next best step for your situation.
I want to again thank everyone who has contacted OEA to share information and concerns about the process being used in their school. Together, we can help this practice work in the professional manner it is intended for.
